Thoracic Herniated Disc Symptoms
The most common thoracic herniated disc symptoms are as follows:
- pain in the middle back (between the shoulder blades)
- traveling pain around the rib cage (this pain can be sharp, burning, tingling, numb, or stabbing)
- shoulder pain
- traveling pain into the arms (usually sharp, burning, or numbness)
- chest pain
- difficulty breathing
- heart palpitations (a feeling like your heart is pounding strongly in your chest)
A herniated disc in the thoracic area of the spine can be very serious, simply because the nerves in this area of the spine not only control the muscles of the middle back, they also control vital organs such as the heart and lungs.
This is why you will notice that some of the symptoms are related to the heart and chest. Of course, not everyone with a thoracic herniated disc experiences these types of symptoms, because the symptoms a person experiences depends on where the herniated disc is located.
If the disc is pressing on a nerve that affects the heart and lungs, it is more likely that you will experience these types of symptoms.
The good news is that there are many options available for alleviating these symptoms, many of which do not involve surgery. In fact, surgery is usually the last choice for this condition, because the success rate is very low.
