Teaching hospitals are where most of the research is being done with artificial discs, and the surgeons who work in these hospitals are typically the best in their specialty. These hospitals are generally located in larger cities.
Currently, the most common forms of lumbar disc surgery involve either removing part or all of the disc, or fusing the bones above and below the damaged disc together.

I always encourage people to try every possible treatment option prior to considering surgery for a herniated disc.
