Laser Back Disc Surgery
With the invention of new technology, laser back disc surgery has become more and more common. There are many advantages to the use of lasers in surgical procedures.
First of all, the laser is very precise. Back surgery for a bulging / herniated disc has always been very complicated, simply because of the fact that the affected nerve (which causes all of the pain and dysfunction with this type of condition) is located directly behind the injured disc.
Because of this, there is always a risk that the surgeon will cut the nerve and cause permanent damage. Lasers are much more specific and controllable, which reduces this risk.
In addition to this, lasers usually allow a surgeon to make smaller cuts (incisions) to work on the damaged area, which allows for faster healing time, and less scar tissue. Scar tissue is a complication of any surgery – this is weaker tissue that predisposes a person to easily re–injuring the same area in the future.
More specifically, in the case of bulging / herniated disc surgery, scar tissue will build up around the nerve, and eventually cause pressure on the nerve again, causing the same pain and symptoms.
This brings up a very important consideration before you decide to have back disc surgery of any kind – not only are most surgeries ineffective, many individuals who do experience relief will have the pain return within 5 years.
This is the reason I always encourage patients to consider all of their treatment options prior to having surgery. Unfortunately, most doctors aren’t aware of many newly discovered treatments for healing a bulging / herniated disc, so you have to be willing to do a little research if you want to make sure you’ve exhausted all of your options.
