Intervertebral Disc Decompression Therapy
Intervertebral Disc Decompression Therapy (AKA – Axial Decompression Therapy) is quickly becoming one of the most effective treatments for a bulging / herniated disc.
Not only is this treatment natural, the success rate is very high. In fact, depending on the severity of the herniated disc, research has shown that this therapy is effective anywhere from 60% – 86% of the time. This success rate is much higher than most traditional medical treatments for the same condition.
A disc of the spine has 2 parts – a thick outer layer (called the annulus), and a jelly center (called the nucleus). In the case of a bulging / herniated disc, the annulus tears (usually at the back of the disc, which is right next to the nerves of the spine), and the nucleus starts to shift into the torn area (which causes a bulge).
The bulge applies pressure to the nerve, which is what causes the pain and disability associated with a bulging / herniated disc.
Intervertebral Disc Decompression Therapy involves laying on a special table, which then stretches and pumps the part of the spine where the damaged disc is. The stretching action causes the nucleus to be sucked back where it belongs (which reduces the bulge), and the pumping action brings new nutrition and oxygen into the disc for faster healing.
Although this treatment is a great option for a bulging / herniated disc, it needs to be done in combination with other treatments (usually physical therapy and chiropractic care) to get the best result.
