Herniated Back Disc Surgery

Herniated back disc surgery is always the last resort when trying to heal a herniated disc. Unfortunately, the success rate of back disc surgery is very low, which is why it isn’t the first choice in most situations.

Currently, the most common forms of disc surgery involve either removing the part of the disc that is herniated, or removing the disc completely and fusing the bones above and below the disc.

Only 16% of the people who have back disc surgery experience relief, and the majority of these patients will have the pain return within 5 years of having the surgery.

Because of this, it is very important that you try everything you possibly can to heal your herniated back disc before you finally decide to have surgery. The only time doctors recommend surgery first is in the case of a lumbar (low back) herniated disc, where the patient is losing control of their bowel and bladder.

The most common treatments a doctor will recommend prior to surgery are medications, epidurals and cortisone shots, and physical therapy. In addition to this, there are many other treatments available that most doctors aren’t usually aware of, and the success rates of some of these treatments are much higher than anything else available.

Many alternative treatments, for example, have success rates as high as 86%, but in order to heal your herniated disc properly, I’ve found that it usually takes the right combination of treatments for the best results.
