Double Disc Back Surgery

One of my patients recently asked me about double disc back surgery – she had been diagnosed with two herniated discs in her low back, and came to me as a last resort prior to surgery.

After discussing her options, I realized that there were probably a number of people with multiple herniated discs who had the same concerns she had, so I decided to write an article about the topic.

First of all, it should be noted that the majority of back surgeries are not effective to begin with, which is why most doctors will try every other option before considering surgery.

This is particularly true if you have more than one herniated disc – it’s not often that you hear of surgeons performing surgery on more than one disc at a time. Back surgery can be a very touchy thing, because there are so many vital tissues around the area where the surgery needs to be performed.

In particular, the nerves near the disc are the major concern – one wrong move, and one of these nerves can be damaged permanently. Performing surgery on more than one disc at a time increases the likelihood that damage will be done to a nerve, simply because the surgeon will be coming close to more nerves in this case.

As a doctor who has worked with thousands of patients suffering with bulging / herniated discs, I would strongly encourage you to consider every option before deciding to have surgery.

With that said, there are many options that your doctor may not even know about, so don’t be afraid to dig into the topic and research all of the possibilities available to you.
