Back Surgery – Disc Technology
Although new disc technology for back surgery may appear impressive on the surface, the success rates for back disc surgery have not improved, and much of this technology is not available to the general public yet.
With that said, it is still important to realize that back surgery may be inevitable for some. The key is to try every other alternative prior to considering surgery. Most doctors take this approach, simply because of the low success rate for surgery.
After trying medications, physical therapy, cortisone shots, and pain management treatments, surgery is usually recommended.
The most common form of disc surgery involves removing the disc, or the part of the disc that is bulging and pressing on the nerve (which is what causes so much pain).
Although there is newer technology available (such as artificial discs), this type of surgery is still in the experimental stages, and is typically only performed in teaching hospitals.
In fact, I usually recommend that people go to university hospitals if they are considering any type of spinal surgery. The surgeons who teach at these hospitals are typically at the top of their specialties.
Most of these hospitals are in larger cities, so depending on where you live, you may need to travel, but it’s usually worth it for this type of surgery.
Finally, if you are the type of person that needs to be absolutely sure that you’ve tried everything possible before surgery, there are many treatments available for bulging / herniated disc healing that most doctors aren’t even aware of.
