Disc Fusion Back Surgery

One of the many forms of back surgery is a disc fusion. This type of surgery is not performed as frequently as it used to be simply because one of the major problems with this surgery is that it leads to future problems, which we’ll discuss in a minute.

This surgery is usually performed in the case of a bulging / herniated disc, as well as when the condition is complicated by severe arthritis of the spine.

Basically, the surgeon removes the damaged disc and fuses the bones above and below together. They do this by taking bone from other locations in the body – usually the hip, and using that extra bone to form a bridge between the bones being fused. They may also use screws to hold the bones together, but this isn’t as common as it used to be.

The major concern with this type of surgery is the future complications that may occur. When the bones are fused, they stop moving completely, which forces the bones above and below the fused area to work twice as hard.

Because these bones are working harder, they wear out prematurely and develop the same problem you had in the area that was fused. After this occurs, the damage spreads throughout the remainder of the spine.

In addition to the future complications that can occur, the success rate of this type of back surgery is very low. This is why most doctors will try everything they can possibly think of prior to recommending surgery.

The problem is that many doctors aren’t aware of all the options available for healing a bulging / herniated disc.
