Back Disc Implants
Although there has been much publicity about back disc implants, this technology has really not been perfected at this time.
This is a great concept in surgery, because many of the current surgeries for bulging / herniated discs involve either removing the part of the disc that is bulging, or removing the disc completely and fusing the bones above and below the damaged disc.
In both of these cases, the success rate is very low, and many people who have one of these types of surgeries will have the same problem re–occur within 5 years following the surgery.
Many people are under the impression that surgery is a permanent fix for a bulging / herniated disc, and this simply isn’t the case.
The concept behind back disc implants is that the surgeon would be able to remove the disc and replace it with an implant that would work similarly. Almost like a hip replacement works now.
Most of the research with back disc implants occurs at teaching hospitals in larger cities, so if this is something you are interested in pursuing, that is usually where you have to look. Just realize that this technology is still new, and it’s unknown what the future outcome could be for this type of surgery.
Even with this new technology, I still recommend that a person do everything possible to heal their bulging / herniated disc prior to undergoing surgery of any kind.
Unfortunately, many doctors aren’t even aware of all of the treatment options available.
