Artificial Disc and Revision Back Surgery
One of the major concerns for people who have back surgery is that the surgery is not permanent – inevitably, the problem will return, and you’re left with the decision of whether to have another surgery or not. Many of my patients in this situation have asked me questions about artificial discs and revision back surgery.
We’re starting to hear more and more about artificial discs being used in back surgery. Although this is a great concept, the technology has not been perfected at this point.
However, the question I have from patients is – if they have to have a revision back surgery (a subsequent surgery following the original surgery), would it be beneficial to seek out artificial disc surgery rather than the other options available today?
My answer is pretty much the same no matter what type of surgery you are considering – the success rate of these surgeries is still pretty low, and I have to wonder – if the first one didn’t work, do you really want to consider another?
I understand that there are some cases where surgery is inevitable, and when all else fails, future surgeries may be necessary as well. However, I always wonder how many people really do try all of the available options for healing a bulging / herniated disc prior to having surgery.
Surprisingly, even those who believe they have tried everything don’t realize that even many doctors aren’t aware of all of the treatment options available. I know this sounds crazy, but it’s the truth – there are many new treatment options available that have much higher success rates than surgery, and because they’re so new, they may be unknown to your doctor.
